WestJet's MAX 8 is one of the trickiest narrowbodies in North America to seat-pick, because the same flight number can show up as any one of four very different cabins. Get it right and you're in a 38-inch-pitch Premium recliner with free Starlink. Get it wrong and you're in a non-reclining economy seat with no screen and no Wi-Fi. This guide tells you how to read which one you're on and where to sit in each.

How to Tell Which Version You're On
Check these in order — the first one that resolves it wins:
- Wi-Fi brand at booking / on the seat map. Starlink = a refreshed jet (2025 or 2026 cabin). Panasonic = the original cabin. No Wi-Fi listed = the all-economy 189-seat jet.
- Is there a Premium cabin (rows 1–3, 2 seats either side of the aisle)? Yes = original or 2026 refresh. No — every row is 3-3 from row 1 = the 189-seat all-economy jet.
- Total seat count. 174 with Premium = original or 2026 refresh; 180 = 2025 refresh; 189 all-economy = the densified jet.
- Does economy recline? If the seat map flags economy as non-reclining/"pre-reclined," you're on the 2026 Collins cabin.
Premium — Rows 1–3, 2-2
Twelve recliner seats at 38-inch pitch and ~20-inch width, with 5 inches of recline, an AC power outlet and USB. On the newest jets these are Collins MiQ seats; on the original jets they're Recaro cradle seats. Either way this is a genuine domestic-Premium product, not just a blocked-middle economy seat.

The recline catch (2026 Collins cabin only): on the newest jets, economy seats from roughly row 10 back are pre-set and do not recline (only rows 4–9 recline ~3 inches). If reclining matters to you, target the front economy rows on these jets — or pick a different config.
All-Economy 189-Seat Jet — Rows 1–32, 3-3
No Premium, no screens, usually no Wi-Fi, ~29-inch pitch. If you're stuck on one:
- Best: row 16. Rows 15 and 16 are the overwing exit rows and both have extra legroom, but row 15 has restricted recline because of the exit row behind it. Row 16 is the only extra-legroom row that reclines fully. Row 14, ahead of the exits, has standard legroom and restricted recline.
- Avoid: rows 31–32 (lav + galley; row 32 does not recline), row 30 (lav traffic), and 12A/12F, which have no window.
- Row 4 has only three seats, 4A–4C; the right side of that row is open floor.
- Rows 1–3 are sometimes sold as a "Premium" upsell with the middle seat blocked — still an economy seat with more elbow room, not a recliner.

Does WestJet's 737 MAX 8 have a Premium cabin?
Most do — 12 recliner seats in a 2-2 layout at 38-inch pitch, on both the original and newly refreshed jets. The exception is a small number of ex-Swoop/Sunwing/Lynx jets still in a 189-seat all-economy layout, which have no Premium cabin.
Why won't my economy seat recline?
On WestJet's newest (2026) MAX 8 cabin, most economy seats are "pre-reclined" and fixed — only the front rows (about 4–9) recline. If recline matters, choose a forward economy row on those jets, or check that you're booked on an original-cabin aircraft.
Is Wi-Fi free on WestJet's MAX 8?
On Starlink-equipped jets, yes — free to WestJet Rewards members (membership is free). WestJet rolled Starlink across nearly its whole 737 fleet through 2025–2026. Older jets still on Panasonic Wi-Fi charge for access, and the all-economy jets generally have none.
