The Version Lottery

This is the most important thing to know about flying Air India's 777-300ER: which aircraft you're on changes everything. There are two cabins flying today, and they are radically different products.

Variant 1 — Former Etihad cabin (8F · 40J · 280M)

Six aircraft, joined the fleet in March 2023 with their original Etihad interiors retained. This is the cabin Air India now markets as its premium long-haul product — including the Delhi–Melbourne route, where the airline introduced "First Class on the route" using these aircraft. You'll also find them on selected London Heathrow and other premium long-haul rotations.

What makes it good: B/E Aerospace Oasis First Class suites with sliding doors, Stelia Solstys II staggered 1-2-1 Business with full direct-aisle access, Panasonic eX2 IFE at every seat, and Panasonic Avionics satellite WiFi throughout.

What makes it tricky: 3-4-3 Economy at 31″ pitch (the densest 777 layout in the sky), and several quirky partial rows where lavatory blocks eat into the cabin.

Variant 2 — Legacy 2019 cabin (4F · 35J · 308M)

Seven aircraft retained from the pre-Tata era. Smaller First Class, 2-3-2 angled-flat Business (Zodiac Aura Lite — meaning four of every seven Business seats lack direct aisle access), 3-3-3 Economy at 32″ pitch, Thales i5000 IFE, and no WiFi.

This is the one to avoid if you have a choice. The Business Class product in particular is two generations behind the ex-Etihad cabin — angled-flat rather than fully flat, no doors, dated finishes.

⚠️ Refit Alert: What's Coming (and Not Yet Flying)

Air India has confirmed a full 777-300ER retrofit programme beginning early 2027 and running through October 2028. The new cabin will feature:

  • A new First Class (retained on the 777, supplier not yet announced)
  • Collins Aerospace Business Class (new 1-2-1 product)
  • Premium Economy (introduced across the long-haul fleet)
  • A new Economy product

If you see references elsewhere to a "Tata-refit" or "new 2024" 777-300ER cabin with 1-2-1 J + Premium Economy + 3-3-3 Y — that aircraft does not exist yet. The first retrofitted 777 will not enter service before early 2027 at the earliest.

How to Tell Which Version You're On

Three reliable signals before boarding:

  1. Check the seat map at booking. If Business is 1-2-1 (staggered) with seat letters A, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, you're on the ex-Etihad cabin (Variant 1). If it's 2-3-2 with seat letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, you're on the 2019 cabin (Variant 2). Economy gives the same tell: 3-4-3 = Variant 1, 3-3-3 = Variant 2.
  2. Check the route. Premium long-haul rotations including Delhi–Melbourne, certain London Heathrow services, and other high-yield routes are scheduled for the ex-Etihad aircraft. Tier-two long-haul tends to be the legacy 2019 cabin.
  3. Check the registration. Ex-Etihad airframes carry registrations in the VT-AEK to VT-AEP range (formerly A6-ETK and similar Etihad regs). Legacy airframes are mostly in the VT-ALA to VT-ALU range.

Aircraft swaps are common, especially out of Delhi. Check 24 hours before departure on ExpertFlyer, Flightradar24, or Air India's manage-booking page if seat selection matters to you.

Variant 1 — Ex-Etihad cabin (8F · 40J · 280M)

First Class (Rows 1–2, 1-2-1)

Eight B/E Aerospace Oasis suites with sliding doors — 81″ pitch, 80.5″ flat-bed, 29.8″ wide. Genuine first class, not enhanced business.

✅ Best seats

  • 2A / 2K — two windows each, deepest position from the aisle, one row further from the forward galley than Row 1. The quietest spots in the cabin.
  • Honeymoon pick: 2D / 2G — centre-pair Row 2 suites with a removable divider between them.
  • 1A / 1K — slightly closer to the forward galley than Row 2 but still excellent.

🚫 Avoid

1D / 1G — centre-pair, Row 1, with the forward lavatory and galley directly ahead. Quieter alternatives exist in Row 2.

Business Class (Rows 5–15, staggered 1-2-1, row 13 skipped)

Forty Stelia Solstys II seats — 73″ pitch, 76″ flat-bed, 20″ wide. Full direct-aisle access from every seat. No doors (Stelia Solstys II predates the door-suite era).

Reading the stagger. Odd rows (5, 7, 9, 11, 14) seat A and K as window thrones — pushed further from the aisle, with maximum privacy and a wider console between you and the aisle. E and F are the centre pair in odd rows. Even rows (6, 8, 10, 12, 15) seat C and H closer to the aisle (less privacy), with D and G as the centre pair.

✅ Best seats — solo travellers

  • 5A / 5K, 9A / 9K — odd-row window thrones in the front mini-cabin, away from galley and lav noise
  • 14A / 14K — odd-row throne in the rear mini-cabin, last "good" row before the cabin ends

✅ Best for couples

  • 5E / 5F, 9E / 9F — odd-row centre pair, side-by-side
  • 6D / 6G, 8D / 8G — even-row centre pair alternative

🚫 Seats to avoid

  • 7E / 7F — bassinet position and lavatory directly ahead. Worst combination in the cabin.
  • Row 15 (any seat) — last J row before the Y bulkhead behind it. Some boarding/deboarding spillover from Y on busy flights.

Economy (Rows 16–46, 3-4-3)

280 Weber 5751 seats — 31″ pitch, 17.3″ width. Tight. The 3-4-3 layout means a 4-seat centre block between the aisles, so some seats are two from the nearest aisle.

✅ Best in Economy

  • Row 16 windows (16A / 16C / 16H / 16K and 16B / 16J) — bulkhead, extra legroom, two-window alignment at A/K. The pick of the cabin if you're in Y.
  • Row 35 D / E / F / G — bulkhead behind the mid-cabin partition, extra legroom, no lav directly behind. 35D and 35G are bassinet positions; take 35E or 35F to avoid possible infant proximity.
  • Rows 26 / 28 / 40 A and K — windows align particularly well in these rows (a quirk of the 777's window spacing relative to seat pitch).
  • Rows 42–46 A and K — tapered tail section, only 2-4-2 here (no B or J), so window-pair seats lose the aisle-adjacent neighbour.

🚫 Seats to avoid in Economy

  • Row 16 D / E / F / G — bulkhead BUT lavatory directly behind. The legroom isn't worth the constant traffic and door-flap noise.
  • Row 17 — entire row — backs onto the same lavatory cluster behind Row 16's centre. Worst row in the front Y mini-cabin.
  • Row 18 — only four seats (A, C, H, K) due to a mid-cabin lavatory block. Two seats in row, no rest.
  • Row 19 — exit row, but compromised. 19A is 15% intruded by the exit door (no window), 19K is 10% intruded (no window), and 19D / E / F / G face the lavatory cluster directly ahead.
  • Rows 30 / 31 — rear lavs of the front Y cabin; 30A/B and 30J/K back directly onto lavs.
  • Row 32 — only four seats (D, E, F, G). Side lavs and the rear-mid galley occupy the rest of the row.
  • Row 33 — exit row, but worse than 19. 33A is 75% intruded by the exit door (essentially a useless seat) and 33K is 65% intruded. Aim for 33B / 33C / 33H / 33J instead — the genuinely good exit seats on this aircraft.
  • Row 34 — partial row (no centre block), bassinet-noise risk from Row 35 ahead.
  • Row 46 — last row, limited or no recline, rear galley directly behind.

Variant 2 — Legacy 2019 cabin (4F · 35J · 308M)

First Class (Row 1 only, 1-2-1)

Four first-class suites — 80″ pitch. Open suites (no doors), older hard product than the ex-Etihad cabin but still a true first-class experience.

Best: 1A / 1K — window suites, two windows each. Couples: 1D / 1G — centre pair, no divider between, but workable.

Business Class (Rows 8–14, 2-3-2, rows 11 and 13 skipped)

Thirty-five Zodiac Aura Lite angled-flat seats — 76″ pitch. Critical caveat: this is not a fully flat bed. It's angled-flat, meaning you slide down at night. The hard product is roughly 15 years old.

The 2-3-2 layout also creates a structural problem: in the centre block, the middle seat (E) has no direct aisle access — the passenger needs to climb over E or F.

✅ Best

Window seats on odd rows (8A / 8K, 10A / 10K, 12A / 12K, 14A / 14K) — direct aisle access on the side blocks, away from the centre.

✅ Couples

D / F pairs — centre block, climb over E if you must, but you have each other's company.

🚫 Avoid

Any E (centre middle) in any row — trapped position, climbing required. Avoid Row 14 entirely — last row, backs onto the Y cabin.

Economy (Rows 17–53, 3-3-3)

308 Safran Z300 seats — 32″ pitch. One inch more than Variant 1, which matters more than it sounds for a 12-hour flight.

✅ Best in Economy

  • Row 17 windows (17A / 17K) — bulkhead behind the J cabin. Extra legroom, paid extra-legroom on most fares.
  • Row 27 D / E / F (exit row centre) — exit-row legroom without the bulkhead lavatory issue.
  • Row 41 A / C and 41 H / K — exit row with only four seats per row (no B, no J, no centre block). Genuinely roomy.

🚫 Seats to avoid in Economy

  • Row 17 D / E / F — bulkhead but the centre lavatory block sits directly ahead.
  • Rows 24–25 — lavatory cluster directly behind. Strong avoid.
  • Row 26 — partial row (only H, J, K). Three seats, lav block on the left, cramped feel.
  • Row 27 A / K — exit row, BUT the door intrudes 10–15% of seat width and there's no window. The middle three (D / E / F) are the good ones in this exit row, not the windows.
  • Rows 38–39 — same lavatory issue as 24–25, mid-cabin position.
  • Row 40 — partial (only H, J, K). Lavatory cluster + rear galley behind.
  • Row 41 D / E / F — bulkhead but lav ahead.
  • Row 42 — partial (only A, C, D, E, F, H, K — no B and no J).
  • Rows 50–53 — tail taper. Row 53 is just D / E / F (three centre seats only). No recline, rear galley adjacent.

Will I be on the new Tata-refit 777-300ER?

Not yet. The 777-300ER retrofit programme begins in early 2027 and runs through October 2028. Every Air India 777-300ER flying today is one of the two cabins above.

Which Air India 777-300ER routes have First Class?

Both variants have First Class, but the bigger and better First Class cabin (eight suites with doors) is on the ex-Etihad aircraft. Air India deploys these on premium long-haul routes — at the time of writing, Delhi–Melbourne, certain London Heathrow services, and selected high-yield rotations. Schedules change; check at booking.

Is Economy on the ex-Etihad cabin really 3-4-3?

Yes. Air India retained the original Etihad 280-seat Economy configuration, which uses 3-4-3 — the densest 777 layout in service. The legacy 2019 cabin uses the more comfortable 3-3-3 layout, but offers a worse Business Class. There's a tradeoff at every cabin.

Are 19A and 19K really worth avoiding even though they're exit row?

On Variant 1, yes — both have door intrusion (15% at A, 10% at K) and neither has a window. The middle seats in Row 19 (D / E / F / G) face the lav cluster ahead, so the genuinely good exit row on this aircraft is Row 33 B / C / H / J, with 33A and 33K being the worst seats in the cabin due to 65–75% door intrusion.

Is there WiFi on Air India's 777-300ER?

Only on the ex-Etihad cabin (Variant 1), which retains Panasonic Avionics satellite WiFi. The legacy 2019 cabin has none. Coverage and speed on Variant 1 vary by route.

Will the retrofit add Premium Economy to the 777?
