The Version Lottery: This One Matters
JAL operates 23 Boeing 787-8s in multiple configurations. On international routes, you'll encounter one of two radically different Business Class products:
Sky Suite (SS8) — 186 seats: WIN ✅
The Apex Suite by Safran is one of the best Business Class seats in the sky. Fully flat bed at 74" with a 25.5" width, staggered 2-2-2 layout where every single seat has direct aisle access via clever angled walkways. Privacy partitions, 23" personal screens (the largest in any Business Class), Airweave mattresses on long-haul flights, and only 30 passengers in a cabin that feels intimate and exclusive.
This product is so good that some frequent flyers prefer the 787-8 Sky Suite over JAL's larger 787-9 because the smaller cabin means better service ratios and a quieter environment.
Shell Flat Neo — 206 seats: AVOID ❌
The Shell Flat Neo is JAL's older Business product: an angle-flat recliner that does not fully recline to a flat bed. The seat is 22.3" wide (3" narrower than the Apex) with just 60" of pitch. Critically, window seats have no direct aisle access — you must climb over your neighbour. On a 10-hour transpacific flight, this is a deal-breaker.
The Shell Flat Neo is mostly scheduled on shorter intra-Asian routes, but aircraft swaps can put it on any route.
How to tell: Check the seat map. 186 total seats = Sky Suite (good). 206 total seats = Shell Flat Neo (bad). JAL's website also lists seat types on their booking page — look for "JAL SKY SUITE" vs "JAL SHELL FLAT NEO." If in doubt, the seat map column count in Business reveals it: the Apex Suites show a staggered pattern; the Shell Flat Neo shows a uniform 2-2-2 grid.
Note: There's also a domestic 787-8 (291 seats: 6 First + 58 J Class + 227 Economy in 3-3-3) used only on Japanese domestic routes. You won't encounter this on an international booking.
Business Class: Sky Suite Apex (30 Seats, 2-2-2)
The Apex Suite is JAL's signature product, also found on their 787-9 (as SKY SUITE) and 777-300ER. The 2-2-2 staggered layout is unusual — most competitors use 1-2-1 reverse herringbone — but the stagger ensures direct aisle access from every seat, including windows.
Best Business: 8A/8K or 8C/8H (Rear Row) ✅
Row 8 is the last row of the Business cabin on the Sky Suite 787-8, and it's the quietest. It's the furthest from both the forward galley (in front of row 1) and the mid-cabin galley (behind row 8). Minimal foot traffic.
Second Best: 2A/2K or 3A/3K (Front Cabin, Windows)
Rows 2–3 window seats offer excellent privacy thanks to the staggered placement — the window-side seats (A and K) in even-numbered rows are positioned further from the aisle. Row 1 has more legroom but is right next to the forward galley, which generates noise during meal prep.
For Couples: Centre Pairs (D/G) in Any Row
The centre seats (D and G) sit side by side with a retractable partition. Lower it and you have a shared space for conversation and dining. These are JAL's answer to the "honeymoon seat" concept.
Avoid: Row 1A/1K ❌
Row 1 windows are adjacent to the forward galley. Multiple FlyerTalk reports cite persistent galley noise making sleep difficult, particularly on the 787-8 where the small cabin means the galley is very close.
Business Class: Shell Flat Neo (30 Seats, 2-2-2) — If You Must
If you end up on a Shell Flat Neo aircraft, minimise the damage:
Best: 1A/1C or 1H/1K — front row, maximum legroom, away from rear galley.
Avoid: Any window seat if travelling solo — you'll need to climb over your neighbour to reach the aisle. Take an aisle seat (C or H) for easier access.
The Shell Flat Neo is a serviceable recliner for daytime flights under 6 hours. On overnight or transpacific services, it's a significant downgrade from the Sky Suite. If you see "Shell Flat Neo" on your booking, consider changing flights to a Sky Suite-equipped aircraft if the route allows.
Economy Class: JAL SKY WIDER (2-4-2)
This is where JAL genuinely stands apart. While virtually every other 787 operator globally has moved to 3-3-3 (nine-abreast), JAL maintains 2-4-2 (eight-abreast) on all international 787s. The result is remarkable:
- Seat width: ~48cm (19") — 5cm wider than the industry standard. That's the difference between cramped and comfortable on a 10-hour flight.
- Seat pitch: ~84cm (33") — generous by any standard.
- No middle-of-five seat — the window pairs (A-B and H-K) have just two seats, so there's no middle seat on the sides. Even the centre block (C-D-E-F) has four seats, not five.
- Seatback IFE with 10.6" personal screens (8.9" in bulkhead rows).
- USB and laptop power at every seat.
- Won Skytrax "World Best Economy Class Seat" in 2025.
This is not marketing — JAL's 787 Economy is measurably wider and more spacious than the same aircraft at ANA, Qantas, Emirates, or virtually any other operator. If you have a choice between JAL and another 787 carrier on the same route, JAL's Economy is the clear winner.
Best Economy: Window Pairs A-B or H-K, Rows 15–20 ✅
The window pair seats on either side of the cabin give couples a private duo with no middle seat. Rows in the mid-cabin section avoid both the forward galley noise and the rear lavatory traffic. The 787's large windows are a bonus in window seats.
Best Solo Economy: A or K (True Window)
The outermost window seats (A and K) give you the fuselage wall to lean against plus only one neighbour. At 19" width, the window seat is genuinely comfortable for sleeping on overnight flights.
Avoid: Centre-Centre (D-E) in the 4-Block ❌
Seats D and E are the two middle positions in the centre block. While better than a 3-3-3 middle seat (you only have one armrest battle per side rather than two), they're still the least desirable positions. Choose C or F (aisle) if you must sit in the centre.
Avoid: Last Row ❌
As always, the last Economy row is adjacent to the rear lavatories. Limited recline, constant foot traffic, galley noise.
JAL 787-8 vs JAL 787-9
| Feature | 787-8 Sky Suite | 787-9 Sky Suite | 787-9 Sky Suite III |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business seats | 30 (2-2-2 Apex) | 44 (2-2-2 Apex) | 28 (1-2-1 herringbone) |
| Business bed | Fully flat, 74" | Fully flat, 74" | Fully flat, 77" |
| Business width | 25.5" | 25.5" | 20" |
| Business screen | 23" | 23" | 17" |
| Premium Economy | None | 35 seats | 21 seats |
| Economy | 156 (2-4-2) | 116 (2-4-2) | 190 (2-4-2) |
| Economy pitch | 33" | 33" | 33" |
The 787-8 Sky Suite has a smaller Business cabin (30 vs 44 seats) which means a more intimate, quieter experience with better service ratios. The trade-off is no Premium Economy cabin — it's Business or Economy only. The 787-9 offers more options, but the 787-8's Sky Suite is arguably the better Business experience for those who value privacy and quiet.
For Economy, both aircraft offer the same excellent 2-4-2 layout at 33" pitch. The choice between them is irrelevant for Economy passengers.
