Layout: Economy Max 2-4-2, rows 1–10 · Business alternating 1-2-1 and 2-2-1 · Economy 2-4-2 behind Business
Version lottery: Yes, but a mild one — HB-JMC has two extra Business seats, eight fewer Economy seats, and the only Wi-Fi on the A340 fleet.
Best seats: Economy Max 2A, 2K, 5A, 5K · Business throne seats 11A, 11K, 14A, 14K · Economy 31A, 31K, 38A, 38K
Seats to avoid: Economy Max 9A, 9B, 9J, 9K, 10D, 10G (lavatories) · rows 26, 27, 44, 45
Entertainment: seatback screens in every seat · Wi-Fi: on HB-JMC only
Being replaced: Edelweiss is moving its long-haul flying to the A350-900; the A340 still flies some routes from Zurich, including Tampa and Denver.
The catch: Economy Max runs right up to the lavatories
Edelweiss sells its extra-legroom seats as Economy Max, and on the A340 they are a whole cabin: rows 1 to 10, ahead of Business, between door 1 and door 2. The pitch is about 35in, against about 30in in standard Economy, and the cabin is small and quiet.
But it ends at the door 2 lavatories, and the last rows you can buy it in pay for that. 9A, 9B, 9J and 9K sit immediately in front of the lavatories, and so do 10D and 10G, in the four-seat centre row. You pay the Economy Max fee for the noisiest seats in the cabin. Rows 2 to 7 are the ones to buy.
Economy Max (rows 1–10)
The standard economy seat at about 35in of pitch, eight across: A B | D E F G | J K. Row 1 is the bulkhead behind the forward galley; row 10 is a centre block of four.
Best Economy Max seats
- 2A, 2K, 5A, 5K — the best-placed windows in the cabin.
- 4A, 4K, 7A, 7K — good windows, mid-cabin.
- 2A + 2B, 5J + 5K — every window seat here is half of a pair, so these are the seats for a couple.
- 4D, 4E, 4F, 4G — the centre block, mid-cabin, if you are travelling as four.
Economy Max seats to avoid
- 9A, 9B, 9J, 9K — right in front of the lavatories.
- 10D, 10G — the same, in the centre row.
- 3A, 3K, 6A, 6K — the window sits behind the seat; lean back to see out.
- Row 1 — the galley is just ahead, the trays fold out of the armrests and there is no floor storage.
Business (rows 11–17 or 11–18)
Lie-flat Thompson Vantage seats. Like the SWISS A340, the cabin alternates two row shapes:
- Rows 11, 14 and 16: A | D G | K. A and K are throne seats, a single seat with a side table on each side.
- Rows 12, 15 and 17: A B | D G | K. A steps past B to reach the aisle; K is a single seat against the window.
- Row 18 (HB-JMC only): a centre pair, 18D and 18G.
There is no row 13. Business sits behind Economy Max, between door 2 and the wing.
Best Business seats
- 11A, 11K — throne seats in the front row.
- 14A, 14K, 16A, 16K — throne seats; the wing fills the view.
- 12K, 15K, 17K — single seats against the window.
- 12A + 12B, 15A + 15B — the pairs, for two travelling together.
Business seats to note
- 12A, 15A, 17A as a solo traveller — you step past a stranger to reach the aisle.
Economy (rows 18–45 or 20–45)
Standard economy at about 30in, 2-4-2. Door 3 splits the cabin after row 27; row 28 is a centre block of four, and from row 41 back the centre narrows to three seats.
Best Economy seats
- 31A, 31K, 38A, 38K, 40A, 40K — the best-placed windows.
- 39A, 39K — about 33in of pitch where the cabin narrows.
- 41G, 42G on the 314-seat aircraft — the narrowed centre block leaves no seat beside you on one side.
- 31A + 31B, 38J + 38K — window pairs for a couple.
Economy seats to avoid
- Rows 26 and 27 — directly in front of the door 3 lavatories.
- Rows 44 and 45 — the last rows, against the rear lavatories.
- 29A, 29K — legroom behind door 3, but the door curves into it.
- 35A, 35K — the window sits behind the seat.
