The catch: the best pairs and the worst pairs look the same

In 2019 Air Mauritius became the first airline in the southern hemisphere to fly the A330-900neo. Its small A330neo fleet shares the long-haul network with the A350-900, on routes from Mauritius to Europe, South Africa, India and Southeast Asia. The older A330-200s are due to leave the fleet as their leases end in 2026.

Economy is the reason to choose this aircraft. It is laid out 2-4-2, so every window seat has just one neighbour. Two people travelling together can take a window pair and have no stranger beside them. A 3-3-3 cabin does not give you that.

The trouble is that a window pair on the booking map does not tell you what is behind it. Rows 27 and 28 stand out because they have no centre seats, only a pair at each window. The centre seats are missing because the lavatories are there. 27A, 27B, 27G, 28A, 28B, 28G and 28H are right beside a lavatory, and 27H is close enough for the queue. The pairs one row ahead, 26A + 26B and 26G + 26H, are near the same lavatories. Move back to row 32 or forward to rows 11–22.

The same applies in the tail. From row 42 the cabin narrows, and the centre block drops from four seats to three. The left-hand pair is fine all the way back. On the right, 44G, 44H, 45G and 45H back onto the rear lavatory, and so do 45D and 45E in the centre.

Business (rows 1–7)

Twenty-eight lie-flat seats in a staggered 1-2-1, and every seat opens straight onto an aisle. The seat alternates by row, and the letters do as well. Even rows (2, 4, 6) are lettered A | D G | J. The window pods sit tight against the window, with the side console on the aisle side, and the two centre seats are split apart. Odd rows (1, 3, 5, 7) are lettered A | E F | J. The window pods sit inboard next to the aisle, with the console between you and the window, and the centre pair sits side by side. There is no B, C or H seat in Business.

Business has three lavatories: one ahead of row 1 and two behind row 7.

Best Business seats

  • 4A, 4J — set against the window in the middle of the cabin, with a well-placed window. The pick for a solo traveller.
  • 2A, 2J, 6A, 6J — the same private pod against the window, in the first and last even rows.
  • 3E + 3F, 5E + 5F — centre pairs set side by side, the seats to book as a couple.
  • 2D, 2G, 4D, 4G, 6D, 6G — centre seats set apart beside the aisle. The better centre seat if you are on your own.

Business seats with a catch

  • 1A, 1J, 3A, 3J, 5A, 5J — odd-row window seats, set beside the aisle with the console against the window. You still see out, but the pod is more exposed to passing traffic than the even-row ones.
  • 1E, 1F — a centre pair at the bassinet position. Families with infants get priority for these.

Business seats to avoid

  • 7A, 7J — the last row, with the lavatories directly behind. Odd-row pods too, so they sit by the aisle.

Economy (rows 10–45)

260 seats in a 2-4-2, lettered A B | C D E F | G H, at about 31in of pitch. There are no rows 13 or 29. The wing sits beside rows 14 to 28, so most window seats in the forward cabin look out at it. No window seat on this aircraft is a blank wall. In a few rows (23, 24 and 42–45) some seat maps label the right-hand pair H and K instead of G and H. It is the same pair of seats.

There are two economy cabins. The forward one runs from row 10 to row 28. Behind it are three lavatories, then door 3, then the rear cabin from row 30 to row 45, which has one lavatory and the galley at the very back.

Best Economy seats

  • 32A + 32B, 32G + 32H — window pairs with well-aligned windows, behind the wing and clear of the lavatories.
  • 39A + 39B, 39G + 39H — window pairs where 39A and 39H have about 33in of pitch, a little more than a standard row.
  • Window pairs in rows 31, 33–37 and 40–43 — ordinary pairs in the rear cabin, away from the wing.
  • 42E, 43E — in the tail the centre block narrows to three seats, and these have open space beside them instead of a neighbour.
  • Rows 11–22 — the forward cabin, quickest off the aircraft, with the wing in the window.

Seats with a catch

  • Row 30 — the exit row behind door 3, with extra legroom. It is also a bulkhead: no floor storage, the tray and screen fold out of the armrest, which makes the seat narrower, and bassinets fit at 30D and 30E. At 30A and 30H the exit door curves into the legroom.
  • 15A, 15H, 24A, 24H, 38A, 38H — the window sits behind the seat, so you lean back to see out.
  • 26A, 26B, 26G, 26H, 27H — close to the mid-cabin lavatories, with queues in the aisle.
  • Row 11 — one row behind the forward lavatories and bassinet row; expect some traffic.
  • 44D, 44E, 45C — close to the rear lavatory.

Economy seats to avoid

  • Row 10 — the first economy row, right behind the lavatories and galley. It has legroom, but also the queue, trays in the armrests and bassinets.
  • 26C, 26D, 26E, 26F — centre seats directly in front of the mid-cabin lavatories.
  • Rows 27 and 28 — window pairs right beside the lavatories, apart from 27H, which is only close to them.
  • 44G, 44H, 45D, 45E, 45G, 45H — directly in front of the rear lavatory.

A330neo or A350? How to tell at booking

Air Mauritius flies both the A330-900neo and the A350-900 on its long-haul routes, and both have 28 seats in Business. Business is a close match on the two aircraft, so it will not tell you which one you have. Economy will. The A330neo has 288 seats and a 2-4-2 Economy cabin whose letters stop at H, so the window seats come in pairs. The A350 has 326 seats and a 3-3-3 Economy cabin lettered to J, so every window seat has two neighbours. If the seat map shows pairs at the windows, you are on the A330neo. If it shows three seats at each window, read the Air Mauritius A350-900 guide instead. Aircraft swaps happen, so check the seat map again a few days before you fly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Air Mauritius A330neo Business class lie-flat?

Yes. All 28 seats lie flat in a staggered 1-2-1, and every seat has direct aisle access. Pick an even row (2, 4 or 6) if you want a window pod set right against the window.

Which Business seats are best for couples?

The odd-row centre pairs, 3E + 3F and 5E + 5F, sit side by side. The even-row centre seats (D and G) are set apart, each beside its own aisle. 1E + 1F is also a side-by-side pair, but it is the bassinet row.

Where are the best Economy seats on the Air Mauritius A330-900neo?

The window pairs in the rear cabin: 32A + 32B and 32G + 32H for the windows, and 39A + 39B and 39G + 39H, where the window seats have about 33in of pitch. Avoid the pairs in rows 26 to 28, which are beside the lavatories.

Does the Air Mauritius A330neo have an exit row with extra legroom?

Row 30, behind door 3. It has extra legroom, but it is also a bulkhead: trays and screens are in the armrests, there is no floor storage, and the door curves into the legroom at 30A and 30H. Row 10 has bulkhead legroom too, but it sits right behind the lavatories.

How do I know whether I am on the A330neo or the A350?

Look at Economy on the seat map. Pairs at the windows (2-4-2, letters to H) mean the A330neo. Three seats at each window (3-3-3) mean the A350-900.
