Sister guide: Air Europa 787-8 — 2-2-2 business on every aircraft, and three ex-Norwegian jets with no flat beds.
The catch: two business cabins under one name
Air Europa’s 787-9 business class is the one in its advertising: a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone where every seat opens onto the aisle and the window seats face the glass. About 65in of pitch, 20in wide, a 16–18in screen. On the main 339-seat layout it is a very good seat.
But not every 787-9 has it. Some carry 30 business seats in an older 2-2-2 layout in rows 1–5, where window passengers climb over a neighbour to reach the aisle. Air Europa describes the whole 787-9 fleet as 1-2-1, so check the seat map before you book: eight business rows means 1-2-1; five rows of six means 2-2-2.
In economy the 787-9s are much alike: 3-3-3 at about 31in, with the same door rows and the same windowless seats at 34A and 34K. The exception is EC-OGY, a single aircraft with 315 seats, where rows 15–30 have about 33in — the roomiest standard economy in the fleet.
How to tell which 787-9 you are on
| Layout | Business | Economy | The tell |
|---|---|---|---|
| 339 seats (most aircraft) | 32, 1-2-1, rows 1–8 | 307, rows 15–55 | Four business seats per row, eight rows |
| 333 seats | 30, 2-2-2, rows 1–5 | 303, rows 15–55 | Six business seats per row, five rows |
| 315 seats (EC-OGY) | 28, 1-2-1, rows 1–7 | 287, rows 15–56 | Seven business rows; economy letters skip F |
Business class
1-2-1 (339 seats, rows 1–8)
32 lie-flat seats, each with direct aisle access. Window seats face the windows; the centre D and G seats angle toward each other, which suits a couple. Lavatories sit at the front of the cabin and behind row 8.
Best business seats
- 2A, 3A, 4A, 6A and 2K, 3K, 4K, 6K — window seats facing the glass, away from the galleys and lavatories.
- 1A, 1K, 8A, 8K — good window seats at either end of the cabin.
- 2D + 2G to 7D + 7G — the centre pairs for two travelling together.
Business seats to avoid
- 8D, 8G — the lavatory is directly behind. A curtain keeps most of the queue out.
- 5A, 5K, 7A, 7K — the windows are poorly placed for the seat; pick another window row for the view.
2-2-2 (333 seats, rows 1–5)
30 lie-flat seats in five rows of six. Only the centre seats, D and G, have direct aisle access; A and K are behind C and H. Pick 2D–5D or 2G–5G if you are alone; a couple can take a window pair, A + C or H + K, and only disturb each other.
1-2-1 on EC-OGY (315 seats, rows 1–7)
28 lie-flat seats, every one with direct aisle access. Window seats face the glass. 3A and 3K have the most poorly placed windows; skip them for a view.
Economy
3-3-3 at about 31in and 17in wide, each seat with a 9in screen. On the 339 and 333 the letters skip E (A B C | D F G | H J K) and rows 35 to 39 do not exist. Lavatories sit at door 2 (ahead of row 15), at door 3 (ahead of row 40) and at the back. The door rows, 15 and 40, have the extra legroom Air Europa sells as XL seats.
Best economy seats (339 and 333)
- 41A, 41K — the best economy windows, in the first full row behind door 3.
- 50A, 50K (339) and 45A, 45K, 49A, 49K (333) — well-placed windows in the rear cabin.
- 15A, 15B, 15J and 40A, 40B, 40J, 40K — door-row legroom with open floor ahead. The exit door curves into the legroom at 40A and 40K, and at 15K on the 339.
Economy seats to avoid (339 and 333)
- 34A, 34K — no window, and the lavatories directly behind.
- Rows 32–34 (centre and aisle) and rows 53–55 — lavatories immediately behind. On the 339, 54A and 54K have a spare side and their own underseat storage, but the lavatories are right behind them.
- 40D, 40F, 40G — bulkhead legroom, but the door 3 lavatories are directly ahead.
EC-OGY (315 seats): the roomy one
Economy on EC-OGY is lettered A B C | D E G | H J K and runs from row 15 to row 56, with no rows 31–39. Rows 15 to 30 have about 33in, two inches more than anywhere else in the fleet; rows 41 onward have about 31in. No economy seat on this aircraft is windowless.
- Best: rows 16–28, the roomy section, away from the lavatories at either end. 40B and 40J have door-row legroom with open floor.
- Avoid: rows 29–30 (lavatories behind), row 15 (lavatories ahead, bassinets) and 40D, 40E, 40G (lavatories ahead).
Madrid to New York and Miami: which economy seat?
Air Europa flies the 787 from Madrid to New York JFK and to Miami, among many routes to the Americas. Westbound flights are daytime; eastbound ones overnight.
- Eastbound overnight, solo: a window in the rear cabin — 41A, 41K, 50A or 50K — away from the door 3 lavatories.
- As a couple: 54A + 54C or 54H + 54K on the 339, if you can live with the lavatories behind; otherwise any A–B or J–K pair in rows 42–50.
- Legroom: the door 3 row, 40B or 40J. Expect the lavatory queue alongside.
- On EC-OGY: anywhere in rows 16–28 for the extra two inches.
