Air China's A350-900 is the airline's most modern long-haul aircraft, and the one most guides describe incorrectly. There is a version lottery — it just hides in Business Class, where two completely different seats sit under the same 32J / 24W / 256Y seat map.

⚠️ Refit alert: both versions are 32J / 24W / 256Y, both put Business in rows 11-18 in 1-2-1, and both use the same seat letters. The booking seat map is effectively identical. The seat you actually sit in is not.
The version lottery: two very different Business cabins
Version 1 — Recaro CL6720 (~26 aircraft, the likely one)
Air China was the worldwide launch customer for Recaro's CL6720, in service since January 2023. It is a staggered 1-2-1 mini-suite with high privacy walls, ambient LED lighting, a Chinese-style reading lamp, an upper stowage drawer and a 78in flat bed. No sliding door — Air China skipped that option. The catch: because it is staggered rather than herringbone, not every seat has direct aisle access. Eight of the 32 seats — the centre pairs in odd-numbered rows — sit side by side away from the aisles.
Version 2 — Collins Super Diamond (~4 aircraft, the older one)
The original A350 fit: reverse herringbone angled toward the window. Older and less private — no enclosing walls, no drawer — but it has one real advantage: all 32 seats have direct aisle access, no exceptions. Premium Economy on these jets uses the Collins MiQ seat rather than Recaro's PL3530.
For most travellers the CL6720 wins on privacy and finish. But couples do better in its odd-row centre pairs, and a solo traveller stuck in one of those pairs would have preferred the Super Diamond. The odds strongly favour the CL6720.
Business Class — rows 11 to 18
Shared specs: 32 seats, 1-2-1, 21in wide, 180° recline to a 78in flat bed, 18in touchscreen, AC + USB-A, adjustable aisle-side armrest. No privacy doors, no Bluetooth audio, no wireless charging on either version. Seat letters: A · | · D · H · | · L.
✅ Best on the CL6720: 12A and 12L for window alignment, 14A/14L for two windows each. Solo travellers: any A or L, or a centre seat in an even row (12, 14, 16, 18) where the pair is split toward the aisles.
🚫 Avoid on the CL6720 if travelling alone: 11D/11H, 13D/13H, 15D/15H, 17D/17H. These odd-row centre pairs sit together in the middle — perfect for couples, but the window-side seat has no direct aisle access. On the Super Diamond, the one seat to skip is 18H: the rear galley is immediately behind.
On the Super Diamond, 16A and 16L are the best window alignment in the cabin, and 11A/11L and 14A/14L get two windows each.
Premium Economy — rows 31 to 33
24 seats in 2-4-2 at 39in pitch, 18.5in wide, 129° recline, 12in screen, adjustable leg and foot rest, AC + USB-A. Seat letters: A · C · | · D · E · F · H · | · J · L. Recaro PL3530 on the CL6720 jets, Collins MiQ on the Super Diamond jets — same dimensions, older design.
✅ Row 32 is the row to book. No bulkhead compromise, no lavatory noise, and 32A/32L are aligned with two windows each. Couples: 32A+32C or 32J+32L, with no third passenger.
🚫 Avoid 31A and 31L. The forward lavatories sit directly ahead — noise, odour and queuing all night. Row 31 in general trades legroom for an armrest tray table, a narrower seat and no underseat storage. If you want the legroom anyway, take 31D-31H: the centre bulkhead is unusually generous (35in to the wall on CL6720 jets, 32-33in on Super Diamond jets).
Economy — rows 34 to 63
256 seats in 3-3-3, Recaro CL3710, 31in pitch, 18in wide, 116° recline, 11in touchscreen. Identical on both versions — the lottery does not affect Economy. Seat letters: A · B · C · | · D · E · H · | · J · K · L. Note the unusual centre block: there is no F or G seat in Economy, and the middle seats are B, E and K.

Cabin structure: Economy is split by a mid-cabin facilities block. Rows 34-47 form the forward section, then lavatories and a galley, then rows 48-63. Row 48 has only four seats (B, C, J, K) and row 49 has six (A, B, C, J, K, L) — the centre block resumes at row 50. At the rear the outboard seats stop after row 62, and row 63 is a three-seat centre block only.

How to tell which version you're on
Be realistic: the booking seat map will not tell you. Same seat count, same rows, same letters. What does work:
- Play the odds. Roughly 26 of 30 aircraft have the CL6720.
- Check the cabin photography for your specific flight. The CL6720 has tall enclosing walls and a small Chinese-style lamp; the Super Diamond is an open angled shell with no lamp.
- Look up the registration and check the delivery date. Aircraft delivered from 2023 onward carry the CL6720.
- Route type is a weak signal only — Air China rotates A350s across trunk domestic and long-haul alike.
