Aeromexico 787-8 & 787-9 Seat Selection Guide (2026)
Aeromexico’s two Dreamliners are one of the sharpest version lotteries in the Americas. Both are sold as Clase Premier at the same fare. On the 787-9, every business seat is on the aisle; on the 787-8, the window passengers climb over a stranger to get out. This page tells you which one you are on, and covers the 787-8’s seats. How to tell which one you are on
- Count the seats on the seat map. 274 = 787-9 · 243 = 787-8.
- Look at the windows in Clase Premier. Single seats = 787-9; pairs = 787-8.
- Look where Premier ends. Row 10 = 787-9; row 6 = 787-8.
- Check again before you fly. Aeromexico swaps the two on the same routes, in both directions.
The version lottery
Each aircraft has one layout. The lottery is between them, and it is mostly about business class: the 787-9’s Collins Super Diamond seat gives every passenger the aisle, while the 787-8’s older 2-2-2 seat does not. Aeromexico has announced no refit of the 787-8.
Further back the picture flips slightly: the 787-8’s AM Plus is sold at 36in against 34in on the 787-9.

The 787-8 has no separate guide, so its seats are covered here. Clase Premier letters run A C | D F | G J; economy is A B C | D E F | G H J.
Clase Premier (rows 1–6)
32 lie-flat seats in 2-2-2, split into rows 1–4 and a rear section of rows 5–6. Row 5 is the centre pair only (5D, 5F). Only the aisle-side seats — C, D, F and G — have direct aisle access.
Best 787-8 Clase Premier seats
- 1D, 1F, 2D, 2F, 3D, 3F, 4D, 4F, 5D, 5F — centre seats, each with its own aisle and no one to climb over.
- 1C, 1G, 2C, 2G, 3C, 3G — aisle seats, but the window passenger climbs over you.
- A/C or G/J pairs — fine for two people travelling together.
787-8 Clase Premier seats to avoid
- 4A and 4J — no window. A windowless stretch of wall, and no aisle access.
- Row 6 — the AM Plus bassinets mount directly behind.
- Every A and J seat if travelling alone — no direct aisle access.
AM Plus and economy (rows 8–33)
Best 787-8 economy seats
- 9B–9H, 10B–10H — AM Plus at about 35in, with a seat in front and floor storage.
- 8D, 8E, 8F — the bulkhead, about 28–29in to the wall. 8E is the bassinet.
- 27A, 27J — the best windows in the rear cabin.
787-8 economy seats to avoid
- Rows 20 and 21 — the lavatory bank is directly behind. 21A and 21J have great windows, but not enough to fix it.
- 22D, 22E, 22F — a centre bulkhead with the lavatories immediately ahead.
- 23A and 23J — the exit door curves into the legroom and there is no usable window.
- 30A and 30J — no window.
- Rows 31–33 — the rear lavatories.
- 10A/J, 14A/J, 17A/J, 20A/J, 26A/J, 29A/J, 32A/J — the window sits behind the seat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am on the Aeromexico 787-9 or 787-8?
Count the seats: 274 is the 787-9, 243 the 787-8. Single seats at the windows in Clase Premier mean the 787-9.
Is the Aeromexico 787-8 business class bad?
No — it is a lie-flat bed with the same service. The problem is access: in 2-2-2, the window passenger climbs over the aisle passenger. Travelling alone, book a D or F seat in rows 1–5 and it is a good seat.
Can I switch from the 787-8 to the 787-9?
Only by booking a flight scheduled with the 787-9. There is no fee waiver for an aircraft preference, and swaps happen close to departure.
Does Aeromexico have First Class?
No. Clase Premier is the highest cabin on every Aeromexico aircraft.
