⚡ Breaking Development

Singapore Airlines is spending S$1.1 billion to refit all 41 A350-900 aircraft with new closed-door Business Class suites. The first retrofitted aircraft is expected to enter service in Q2 2026 — meaning the new seats could be flying within weeks.

What's Changing

The Current Product (Being Replaced)

The existing A350-900 Long-Haul Business Class dates from 2013 — an eternity in airline product terms. It's a staggered 1-2-1 layout with 42 lie-flat seats, no doors, and while it was excellent when launched, it's fallen behind competitors. United has already launched and started replacing its Polaris product in the time SQ's current seat has been in service.

Current A350-900 Long-Haul layout (253 seats):

  • 42 Business (2013 seat, no doors)
  • 24 Premium Economy
  • 187 Economy

The New Product (Arriving Q2 2026)

Singapore Airlines has confirmed the new Business Class will feature closing privacy doors — joining Qatar, Delta, ANA, and others in the doored-suite trend. The airline has described it as a "quantum leap" and a "new industry standard," which is bold language even for SQ.

✅ Confirmed

  • Closed-door suite-style Business Class seats
  • Higher privacy, comfort, and convenience
  • Same seat count: 42 Business seats on A350-900LH
  • Faster Wi-Fi (likely Starlink LEO system)
  • Enhanced dining, amenities, soft furnishings
  • Bluetooth headphone pairing
  • Same seat design will go on the 777-9

❓ Not Yet Confirmed

  • Exact seat dimensions (width, bed length)
  • IFE screen size
  • Seat manufacturer
  • Whether staggered layout is retained or changed
  • Throne seat positions (if any)
  • Specific route assignments

SQ has released a brief teaser video showing the outline of the new suite, but full details are expected at a launch event in Q1/Q2 2026.

The Business and Premium Economy seat counts stay the same — SQ is prioritising the experience upgrade over density changes. Economy gains 5 seats, likely from more efficient seat rail spacing.

🏆 The Bigger Story: First Class on the ULR

Singapore Airlines is adding First Class to the A350-900ULR — a four-seat cabin on ultra-long-haul routes like Newark, JFK, and Los Angeles. Previously, First Class was only available on the A380 and 777-300ER. Premium Economy drops substantially (94 → 58 seats) to make room.

For the current ULR product, see our Singapore Airlines A350-900ULR Seat Selection Guide.

Likely First Routes

Singapore Airlines hasn't officially confirmed which routes will debut the new product, but schedule changes and award availability patterns point strongly to specific candidates:

🇬🇧 London Heathrow — Strongest candidate for A350-900LH debut

SQ306/305 is scheduled to switch from a 777-300ER to an A350-900LH from 1 July 2026. This is highly unusual — airlines don't normally downgauge at Heathrow during peak summer season. The most logical explanation: this will be a retrofitted A350 with the new Business Class. SQ traditionally launches new products on the London route (the 2013 seat debuted on London in September 2013).

🇦🇺 Sydney — Also a strong early candidate

Sydney is one of SQ's most important premium routes and has historically been an early adopter of new cabin products.

🇺🇸 Los Angeles — Likely first ULR route

Schedule changes from November 2026 suggest LA will be among the first ULR routes to receive the refitted aircraft, potentially debuting the new First Class in Q1 2027.

What This Means for Your Booking

The Version Lottery Is Coming

For the next 4+ years (2026–2030), Singapore Airlines will operate a mix of old and new A350-900LH aircraft on the same routes. This creates a significant version lottery:

✨ New (2026 refit)

  • Closed-door Business suites
  • Faster Wi-Fi (Starlink)
  • Enhanced everything

📦 Old (current)

  • Open 2013 Business seats
  • Current Wi-Fi
  • Current amenities

On routes like London, Sydney, and eventually many others, you could be booked on a flight with the new product and get swapped to an un-refitted aircraft — or vice versa.

How to Check

Once the refitted aircraft start flying, here's how to tell which version you're getting:

  1. Check the seat map — if Business shows a different layout from the current staggered 1-2-1, it's likely a refitted aircraft
  2. Monitor flight number assignments — SQ will likely prioritise specific flight numbers for the new product initially
  3. Check SeatCompare.ai — we'll update our A350-900 Long-Haul guide and A350-900ULR guide as soon as the new seat maps are confirmed
  4. Award availability patterns — unusual availability or blocks on specific flights can signal new product deployments

Award Booking Strategy

🎯 A350-900LH Debut

  • KrisFlyer Saver awards may be restricted initially (SQ historically blocks Saver on new seats)
  • Advantage awards are more likely to clear
  • Access awards (highest tier) should be available
  • Book London SQ306/305 from 1 July 2026 for best chance at the new seat

👑 A350-900ULR First Class

  • Only 4 seats — Saver availability will be extremely rare
  • Advantage redemptions to LA: ~262,000 miles one-way
  • Advantage redemptions to NYC: ~279,500 miles
  • Book well in advance once specific routes are confirmed

How Does This Compare to Competitors?

The 2026 Business Class needs to compete with products that have launched while SQ's current seat has aged:

Airline Product Launched Doors?
Qatar AirwaysQsuite2017Yes
DeltaDelta One Suites2017Yes
ANATHE ROOM2019No (enclosed)
British AirwaysClub Suite2019Yes
JALA350-1000 Suites2024Yes
Singapore Airlines2026 J (new)2026Yes
Singapore Airlines2013 seat (current)2013No

SQ's new product is arriving later than most competitors' current offerings. The pressure is on to deliver something genuinely class-leading, not just a catch-up. The "quantum leap" language suggests SQ knows this.

Impact on Other SQ Aircraft

The refit only covers A350-900LH and A350-900ULR aircraft. Other SQ types are unaffected for now:

Aircraft Business Seat Changing?
A350-900LH2013 seat → 2026 seatYes (Q2 2026–2030)
A350-900ULR2013 seat → 2026 seat + First ClassYes (Q1 2027–2030)
A350-900 Medium-Haul2018 Regional seatNo change
787-102018 Regional seatNo change
737 MAX 8Thompson Vantage lie-flatNo change
777-300ER2013 seatNot yet — 777-9 replacement pending
A380-8002017 seatNo change

The 777-300ER fleet retains the 2013 seat until replaced by 777-9s (delayed to 2027+). The A380, 787-10, A350 Medium-Haul, and 737 MAX 8 are all unaffected.
