Economy Comfort is worth four inches on one jet and one inch on the other

KLM sells Economy Comfort on the Cityhopper E195-E2 the way it sells it everywhere: a block of rows at the front of economy, extra cost or an elite benefit, more pitch than standard. The block is twelve seats on both cabins. The booking flow is the same on both. The product name is the same on both.

On the 2021 cabin it is rows 5, 6 and 7, sold at 33 inches against a 29-inch cabin standard. Measured, those rows come out at about 34 inches. That is four inches, and it is a real upgrade — the difference between a cramped regional seat and a comfortable one.

On the 2026 cabin it is rows 6, 7 and 8, sold at 30 inches against the same 29-inch standard. Measured, they come out at about 32 inches. That is one inch.

Nothing on a booking screen distinguishes the two. The row numbers differ by one, which no passenger reads as a product difference, and the fare does not tell you which airframe is scheduled. Twelve of the nineteen aircraft carry the four-inch version and seven carry the one-inch version, and you find out when you sit down.

And the window seats in the paid block are the compromised ones

There is a second catch inside Economy Comfort, and it applies to both cabins. On the 2021 jet, every window seat in the block — 5A, 5F, 6A, 6F, 7A and 7F — has its window sitting out of line with the seat. You lean back to see out. The seats that rate best in the block are the four aisle seats: 5C, 5D, 6C, 6D, 7C and 7D.

The 2026 cabin does the same thing one row back: 7A, 7F, 8A and 8F are misaligned, and 6A, 6C, 6D, 6F, 7C, 7D, 8C and 8D are the ones that rate best. If you are paying for Economy Comfort on a Cityhopper E2 and you want a view, the aisle is the better seat — which on a 2-2 aircraft costs you nothing at all.

Four seats apart, and all four of them are in Business

The 2026 cabin has 136 seats to the 2021 cabin’s 132. It is tempting to read four extra seats as a denser economy cabin. It is not. Economy is 116 seats on both. The 2026 cabin adds one Business row — row 5 — and pushes the whole of economy one row aft.

Both cabins skip row 13. Business is a moving curtain over the same 2-2 seat as economy, so the sixteen or twenty seats quoted are the cap, not what is necessarily sold on the day.

The exit rows: one row pays, the next row collects

There are two overwing exits on both cabins, and the pattern is identical — it just sits one row further back on the 2026 jet.

On the 2021 cabin, exits sit after row 12 and after row 14. Rows 12 and 14 both lose recline. Rows 14 and 15 both gain legroom. Row 15 is the only row that gets the legroom and keeps its recline, and all four seats rate best.

On the 2026 cabin, exits sit after row 14 and after row 15. Rows 14 and 15 lose recline, rows 15 and 16 gain legroom, and row 16 is the clean one — all four seats rate best.

Row 14 on the 2021 cabin and row 15 on the 2026 cabin are the seats that look identical to the good row on a booking map and have a fixed seat back. That is the classic exit-row trap, and here it changes row number between two aircraft of the same type at the same airline.

The seats with no window at all

The E195-E2 has a stretch of fuselage where the seat pitch and the window spacing fall out of step, and both cabins lose seats to it — different seats.

Only 22A and 22F overlap. Everything else moves. If you have picked a window seat on a Cityhopper E2 by seat number, there is a real chance the aircraft that turns up puts a wall where you expected glass.

The back of the aircraft

The last row is 34 on the 2021 cabin and 35 on the 2026 one, and on both it is the row to avoid: no recline, a lavatory immediately behind, and galley noise across the last two rows. Rows 33 and 34 on the 2021 cabin, and 34 and 35 on the 2026, both sit in the galley light and noise during the service.
