Emirates A380 Retrofit: What the New 569-Seat Layout Means for Seat Selection

Emirates has begun retrofitting its high-density A380 fleet. The first converted aircraft re-entered service in May 2026, and all 15 of the airline's two-class A380s are due to be reconfigured by the end of 2026.
This is a cabin retrofit, not a retirement. Emirates is keeping the A380 — it is expanding its active A380 fleet and plans to fly the type into the 2040s. What is changing is the interior layout of these 15 aircraft.
What's changing
Each retrofitted aircraft goes from a two-class, 615-seat layout to a three-class, 569-seat layout:
- Before: 58 Business and 557 Economy — no Premium Economy, no First Class.
- After: 76 Business, 56 Premium Economy and 437 Economy — still no First Class.
The new Premium Economy cabin sits on the upper deck in a 2-3-2 layout. This is the first time Emirates has placed Premium Economy on the upper deck of an A380 — on its other A380s, Premium Economy is on the main deck. First Class is not part of this layout.
Why this matters: the version lottery
Emirates operates the A380 in several different configurations, and this retrofit adds another. Depending on the aircraft, a single flight number can be a four-class jet with First Class, a three-class jet, an unconverted 615-seat jet, or one of the new 569-seat retrofits. The differences change which cabins are available and where they sit.
This is a classic version lottery: the seat map shown when you book may not match the aircraft that actually operates the flight — especially now, while the retrofit programme is mid-rollout and swaps are more likely. Always re-check the live seat map closer to departure.
