✈️ Quick Verdict

Cathay is running three separate cabin programmes at once, and they finish at three different times. Aria Suite is on roughly 17 of 35 Boeing 777-300ERs — around half done, with Cathay targeting two-thirds by the end of 2026 and the whole fleet by the end of 2027. Aria Studio, the flat-bed regional business class, reaches the A330-300 at the end of 2026 and the A330-900neo from 2028. A new First Class arrives with the 777-9 in late 2027 — and until then, First survives on fewer than ten un-retrofitted 777-300ERs. The A350 fleet is not in any announced plan. Net effect: on most Cathay routes you are still rolling a dice, and the seat map at booking is the only thing that settles it.

Cathay unveiled Aria Suite on 21 October 2024 and quietly put it to work on Hong Kong–Beijing days later, before the long-haul debut on London in January 2025. Nearly two years on, the question we get most is not "what is Aria Suite like" — it's "will I actually get one?" This piece is the answer: what has been converted, what is coming, when, and how to check your own flight before you commit.

1. Aria Suite on the 777-300ER: about halfway

This is the programme that matters most to passengers today, because it is the only one you can actually book. Cathay is converting its entire long-haul 777-300ER fleet — 35 aircraft, up from an originally planned 30 — to a single three-class layout branded 77J: 45 business, 48 premium economy, 268 economy, 361 seats in total.

Around 17 aircraft had been through the programme as of late July 2026, against 12 at the end of 2025. Cathay has said publicly it expects to reach two-thirds of the fleet by the end of 2026 and finish by the end of 2027. Each jet goes to Xiamen for the work and is reported to be out of service for around seven weeks, which is why a three-year timeline for three dozen aircraft is realistic rather than sandbagged.

The conversion is not a like-for-like seat swap. On a retrofitted 777-300ER:

  • First Class is deleted. The six-suite First cabin now survives on fewer than ten aircraft still in the four-class layout. Once those are converted, Cathay has no First Class at all until the 777-9 arrives.
  • Business settles at 45 seats — up from 40 on the three-class variant, down from 53 on the four-class — in a 1-2-1 layout with sliding doors across rows 11 to 23.
  • Premium economy grows to 48 seats in 2-4-2, running rows 30 to 35. That is a significant expansion: the older variants carry 32 and 34.
  • Economy is 268 seats in 3-4-3 at 31" pitch (31.4" in the DEFG centre block), rows 39 to 72 — about an inch tighter than the main cabin on Cathay's other 777s. The retrofit is a clear win up front and a marginal step back at the rear.

2. Which routes fly Aria Suite right now

With roughly half the fleet converted, Cathay can now schedule Aria aircraft consistently on a handful of rotations rather than sprinkling them randomly. As of the current schedule you can expect Aria Suite daily on Hong Kong flights to:

DestinationRotationNotes
Frankfurt (FRA)CX289 / CX288Daily
London Heathrow (LHR)CX255 / CX250Daily — the long-haul launch route
Los Angeles (LAX)CX884 / CX885Started 4 April 2026; near-daily from 1 May — see note below
Melbourne (MEL)CX163 / CX178Daily
Milan (MXP)CX233 / CX234Daily

Bangkok and Beijing see Aria aircraft on some frequencies, but the pattern shifts by day and by month. Two absences stand out: New York JFK and Toronto are not on the list, which surprises people who assume the flagship product follows the flagship routes. JFK is mostly an A350 operation.

"Daily" is doing some work here. Los Angeles is the clearest example. Aria started on CX884/885 on 4 April 2026 as a Saturday-only operation, and Cathay announced it would "increase to daily" from 1 May — but the published schedule has a Friday gap of roughly late June to early September 2026. Aircraft assignments also get revised when the seasonal schedule firms up at the late-October and late-March changeovers. If you are booking across one of those boundaries, the aircraft shown today is not a promise. Re-check about two months out.

3. How to check whether your flight has Aria Suite

Three checks, in ascending order of reliability.

  1. Google Flights wording. An Aria aircraft lists business class as "Individual suite". The older cabins list as "Lie flat seat". Fast, but it lags reality.
  2. Cathay's own seat map. Click the aircraft type on cathaypacific.com. If it is an Aria aircraft, the cabin is described as having 45 Aria suites.
  3. Count the seats yourself. This is the check that never lies. An Aria 777-300ER has 45 business seats, a row 14, and four seats in row 20. The older configurations have 40 or 53 business seats, no row 14, and only two seats in row 20.

Our Cathay 777-300ER seat guide breaks all three variants down row by row, including which Aria suites sit next to lavatories and which have plugged windows — because "you got the new cabin" and "you got a good seat" are not the same thing.

4. Aria Studio: the bigger deal nobody is talking about

Aria Suite is an upgrade on an already-good product. Aria Studio is a category change. Cathay's A330-300s have flown 2012-era two-abreast recliners in a 2-2-2 layout — no flat bed, no aisle access from the window seat, on flights that regularly run four to five hours. Aria Studio replaces that with a 1-2-1 flat bed with direct aisle access for every passenger, styled after the 777's Aria Suite: 4K screen with Bluetooth, USB-C, wireless charging, privacy dividers.

Regional business class in Asia has been a recliner-versus-flat-bed argument for a decade. Cathay putting flat beds on five-hour intra-Asia sectors moves it materially against Singapore Airlines and the mainland Chinese carriers on the same routes.

The caveats matter, though. The first aircraft is due at the end of 2026, so nothing is bookable yet, and not every A330 is getting it — Cathay has said the oldest, un-refreshed frames are bound for retirement rather than retrofit. Cathay already operates six distinct A330-300 sub-fleets; Aria Studio will make it seven. If you thought the 777 was a lottery, the A330 is about to be worse.

Full breakdown of the existing sub-fleets in our Cathay A330-300 seat guide.

5. First Class: gone, then back

Cathay's First Class is in an odd holding pattern. It now exists on fewer than ten four-class 777-300ERs, and every one of those that goes through the Aria conversion loses it permanently. The replacement is a new fully-enclosed First Class suite designed for the Boeing 777-9, of which Cathay has 35 on order.

Those deliveries have moved repeatedly — the 777X programme is running years behind — and Cathay is now working to a late-2027 first delivery, with nine aircraft nominally due in 2027 and the remaining 26 from 2028. Practically, this means there is a window, likely in 2027, when Cathay has no First Class flying at all. If flying Cathay First is on your list, the remaining four-class 777-300ERs are a closing door, not a standing offer.

6. What this means if you're booking

If you're flying…What to expect
HKG–LHR, FRA, MXP, LAX, SFO, YVR, SYD, MEL, HND, CTSAria Suite is the scheduled aircraft. Verify at booking and again ~2 months out.
HKG–JFK or TorontoMostly A350. Good reverse-herringbone business, but not Aria and not scheduled to be.
Any other long-haul 777 routeGenuine coin-flip. Check the business seat count on the seat map — 45 means Aria.
Intra-Asia on the A330Recliners for now. Aria Studio starts appearing from the end of 2026 on select frames.
Wanting Cathay First ClassFewer than ten four-class 777-300ERs still have it, and that number is falling.

Frequently asked questions

How many Cathay aircraft have the Aria Suite?

Around 17 Boeing 777-300ERs as of late July 2026, out of 35 in the long-haul fleet. Cathay finished 2025 with 12, so the run rate is roughly one aircraft a month.

When will the whole fleet have it?

Cathay expects to be at two-thirds of the 777-300ER fleet by the end of 2026 and to finish by the end of 2027. The 777-9s will be delivered with Aria Suite from late 2027 onward.

Will the A350 get the Aria Suite?

There is no announced plan. The A350 fleet is comparatively young and keeps its current reverse-herringbone business class. If it is ever retrofitted, it is a post-2028 conversation and the product may well have evolved by then.

What's the difference between Aria Suite and Aria Studio?

Aria Suite is the long-haul business class on the 777 — a fully enclosed suite with a sliding door at 43" pitch. Aria Studio is the regional product for the A330, a 1-2-1 flat bed with direct aisle access and privacy dividers but no door. Same design language, different mission.

Does the Aria retrofit make economy worse?

Slightly. The retrofitted aircraft runs 268 economy seats at 31" pitch in 3-4-3 (31.4" in the centre block) — about an inch less than the main cabin on Cathay's other 777s. It is a small number that is not small at hour eleven. Premium economy, by contrast, gets meaningfully bigger on the retrofit, from 32–34 seats to 48.

Is First Class going away?

On the 777-300ER, yes — permanently, aircraft by aircraft, as they are converted. Fewer than ten still have it. A new First Class returns on the 777-9 from late 2027.
