BA A380 Retrofit: Everything We Know About the New Cabin
British Airways is finally retrofitting its 12 Airbus A380s. The project starts in Q2 2026, with the first refurbished aircraft expected back in service by late 2026 and the full fleet targeted for completion by end of 2027. This is the last major piece of BA's long-haul cabin overhaul — and it's a big one.
What's Changing
The numbers tell the story. The current A380 carries 469 passengers. The new configuration drops to 421, with a dramatic shift toward premium:

New First Class: The Details
BA's new First suite debuts on the A380 — it's a completely new product, not a refresh of the existing seat. This is also the design that will go on the Boeing 777-9 when those aircraft eventually arrive.
The confirmed specs from BA's own press release:
- ✦ Width: 36.5 inches (up from 22.5 inches on the current A380 First)
- ✦ Bed: 79 inches, fully rectangular (not tapered)
- ✦ Screen: 32-inch 4K display (up from 15.4 inches)
- ✦ Door: Full sliding privacy door with a 60-inch curved privacy shell
- ✦ Acoustic panelling in the soft walls for sound absorption
- ✦ In-suite wardrobe sized for a carry-on bag
- ✦ Buddy dining: Middle pair can open up across the ottoman for face-to-face dining
- ✦ Do Not Disturb toggle on a wireless seat control tablet
- ✦ Window blinds controlled from the internal panel (three windows per suite)
The materials lean heavily into British craftsmanship — Muirhead leather (the same supplier that did Concorde and the Orient Express), Hainsworth wool from West Yorkshire, Botany Weaving carpet from Dublin. The seat itself is manufactured by Collins Aerospace at their Kilkeel facility in Northern Ireland — their first time producing a first class seat, having previously made BA's Club Suite and short-haul seats.

Club Suite: Upper Deck Only
This is the change that matters most for business class passengers. The current A380 has one of the most unusual business class layouts in aviation: 53 Club World seats on the upper deck (7-abreast) and 44 on the main deck (8-abreast). Neither configuration offers direct aisle access, and the yin-yang alternating layout means some passengers face backwards while being climbed over by their neighbour.
The retrofit moves all 110 Club Suites to the upper deck in a 1-2-1 configuration (4-abreast). No business class on the main deck at all. Every seat gets direct aisle access and a privacy door — the same Collins Aerospace Elevation product already flying on BA's A350-1000s, 787-10s, and retrofitted 777s.
✅ This eliminates the version lottery on the A380 entirely. Currently, the A380 is the last BA long-haul aircraft guaranteed to give you the old Club World product. After the retrofit, it becomes one of the most premium-dense aircraft in the fleet.
World Traveller Plus Gets a Major Expansion
Premium economy grows from 55 to 84 seats — a 53% increase. BA clearly sees strong demand for this cabin on A380 routes. The exact seat model hasn't been confirmed yet, but the current World Traveller Plus product on the A380 uses 2-3-2 configuration, and there's no reason to expect that to change.
Starlink Wi-Fi
All retrofitted A380s will get Starlink connectivity — free for all passengers. This is a significant upgrade from the current situation where BA's A380 Wi-Fi is patchy at best.
Which Routes Will Get It First?
BA currently flies the A380 from London Heathrow to:

One source (a BA crew member quoted on FlyerTalk) suggested the first retrofitted aircraft will likely go on the LA route due to the new First Class product, with Johannesburg potentially last in the queue. But that's unconfirmed — take it with appropriate scepticism.

⚠️ BA took years longer than planned to finish the 777 retrofit programme, so the 2027 completion target should be treated as optimistic. During the transition, you'll have a mix of old and new A380s on the same routes — creating a temporary version lottery that doesn't currently exist on the A380.

Key Things to Watch When Booking
- 🗺️ Seat map is your friend. If the upper deck shows 1-2-1, you've got the new cabin. If it shows the alternating Club World pattern, it's the old one.
- 👑 First Class drops from 14 to 12 suites. Award availability in First will likely tighten.
- 💰 World Traveller Plus is the value play. Growing from 55 to 84 seats means more availability, and the cabin will benefit from the Starlink Wi-Fi upgrade.
- 🔀 Don't assume route = new cabin. During the transition, the same route can alternate between old and new aircraft. Check closer to departure.
