BA 787-9 Seat Map: Club Suite vs Club World (2026)
The British Airways Boeing 787-9 is the airline's mid-size long-haul workhorse — used heavily on routes to North America, the Middle East, parts of Asia, and seasonal services to South America and Africa. It carries four cabins: First, Business (Club World or Club Suite), World Traveller Plus, and World Traveller.
There is no single "BA 787-9" experience. The aircraft now operates in two materially different cabin configurations, and which one you fly is a roll of the dice. This guide covers both.
1. The Version Lottery — and Why It Matters
BA has 28 Boeing 787-9s in its fleet. As of early 2026, they split into two configurations:
| Variant | Aircraft | Business class product | Total seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legacy Club World | 18 | Old 2-3-2 yin-yang seats | 216 |
| Club Suite refit | 10 | New 1-2-1 suites with doors | 215 |
Roughly two in three BA 787-9 departures still operate the legacy Club World cabin. Roughly one in three get the Club Suite refit, with private suites, sliding doors, and direct aisle access from every seat. It is by some distance the biggest product gap on any single aircraft type in BA's fleet — old and new feel like different airlines.
Booking class, fare, and route do not predict which one you'll get. BA shuffles aircraft across routes on a near-daily basis. Even on a major route like London–New York JFK, both variants rotate through the same flight numbers.
⚠️ Refit Alert
If you've paid for Business Class on a BA 787-9, knowing which version you're on before you select a seat is the single most important thing you can do.

3. How to Tell Which Version You're Flying
The most reliable check is registration:
- G-ZBKA through G-ZBKR (the original delivery batch) operate the legacy Club World cabin.
- The Club Suite refits carry registrations from the later block — find your tail number on your booking, ManageMyBooking, or apps like Flightradar24, then cross-check on our flight-number lookup.
Two other signals worth knowing:
- Seat count. If your seat selection screen shows 216 seats, it's legacy. 215 seats means Club Suite.
- Business Class seat numbering. Legacy uses rows 6–7 (mini cabin) and 10–13 (main cabin) for Club World. Club Suite uses rows 5–8 forward and 20–25 rear. If you see seat 5A or 25K in Business, you've got the new product.
BA's own seat map on ba.com is generally accurate once your seat assignment is open, but configurations can swap inside 24 hours of departure for operational reasons. Always re-check on the day.
4. First Class (Both Variants)
First on the 787-9 is identical across both variants — eight suites in a 1-2-1 layout, rows 1 and 2. It's a smaller, more intimate First cabin than the 777 or A380, and that's largely the appeal: quiet, private, and quick to deplane.
✅ Best Seats
- 2A, 2K — Best in cabin. Furthest from the forward galley and First lavatories, no through-traffic.
- 1A, 1K — Same suite, but galley and lavatory traffic immediately ahead — more noise on overnight flights.
- 2E, 2F — Centre pair, only choice for couples wanting to sit together. 2F is a designated bassinet position, so light infant traffic possible.
🚫 Avoid
- 1E, 1F — Centre pair directly facing the forward galley curtain. Noise, light spill, and cabin crew prep through the flight.
5. Business Class — Legacy Club World (18 aircraft)
The legacy product is BA's old 2-3-2 yin-yang Club World — alternating forward- and rear-facing seats, only aisle seats with direct aisle access, and centre seats that are exposed to the cabin. Forty-two seats split between a mini cabin (rows 6–7) and a main cabin (rows 10–13).
The mini cabin is materially better than the main cabin: smaller, quieter, no through-traffic, and 7K has a feature unique on the aircraft.
✅ Best Seats
- 7K — The single best Club World seat on the aircraft. Rear-facing window in the mini cabin with bulkhead exit access — no climbing over your neighbour to reach the aisle when in bed mode. Sometimes blocked for crew rest on ultra-long sectors; check on the day.
- 6A, 6K — Mini-cabin rear-facing windows. Quietest seats outside row 7, fewer crew interruptions than main cabin.
- 11A, 11K, 12A, 12K — Main-cabin rear-facing windows, away from both forward and rear galleys. The pick if the mini cabin is full.
- 7E — Rear-facing centre, hemmed in on three sides. Counterintuitive favourite for solo sleepers — no trolley disturbance, more enclosed feel than other centre seats.
🚫 Avoid
- 7A, 7B, 7D — Lavatory directly behind these mini-cabin seats — door cycling, queue, light.
- 10E, 10F, 10J, 10K — Adjacent to the mid-cabin galley and lavatory cluster. Noise and through-traffic the entire flight.
- Any non-aisle middle seat (E) — Most exposed position in the cabin; least private.
- Any non-7 window — Climb-over required to reach the aisle when your neighbour's bed is flat.
6. Business Class — Club Suite (10 aircraft)
The Club Suite refit fixes nearly every weakness of the old product. Thirty-eight Collins Aerospace suites in a 1-2-1 layout: sliding privacy door, all-aisle access, 79-inch flat bed, 18.5-inch HD touchscreen. Split into a small forward cabin (rows 5–8) and a larger rear cabin (rows 20–25).
The forward cabin is the prize.
✅ Best Seats
- 8A, 8K — Best Business Class seats on the aircraft. Forward mini-cabin window suites at the rear bulkhead — no foot traffic past the suite, quietest position in the cabin.
- 5A, 5K, 6A, 6K, 7A, 7K — Forward-cabin window suites. Quieter than the rear cabin, faster service, faster off the aircraft.
- 5E/5F, 6E/6F, 7E/7F — Centre pairs in the forward cabin — best choice for couples.
- 21A, 21K, 22A, 22K — Rear-cabin window suites that sit cleanly between the forward lavatory cluster (row 20) and rear galley (post-25). Quiet rear-cabin picks.
🚫 Avoid
- 20E — Bulkhead centre suite, lavatory directly ahead. Worst Club Suite on the aircraft.
- 20A, 20F, 20K — Lavatory traffic ahead — moderate noise and queuing through the flight.
- Row 25 — Last row of the rear cabin. Bassinet position behind, occasional infant noise on long flights, and slowest service.
7. Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus)
Both variants run the same 39-seat 2-3-2 Premium Economy, but the row numbering differs.
- Legacy: rows 16–21
- Club Suite: rows 45–50
In both cases, the bulkhead row (16 or 45) has roughly 32–34 inches of legroom to the wall — significantly more than the standard 38-inch pitch. The trade-off: tray table and screen live in the armrest, narrowing the effective seat width, and there's no underseat storage.
The last PE row (21 or 50) has the lavatory cluster directly behind it. Avoid.
✅ Best Seats
- Legacy: 16A, 16B, 16J, 16K — bulkhead window pairs with extra legroom.
- Club Suite: 45A, 45B, 45J, 45K — same pattern, bulkhead window pairs, generous legroom to the wall.
🚫 Avoid
- Legacy: 20D, 20E, 20F, all of row 21 — last full row plus lavatory-adjacent partial row. 21A and 21K have no window — wall only.
- Club Suite: 49B, 49D, 49E, 49F, 49J, all of row 50 — same pattern, different numbering. 50A and 50K are the no-window seats here.
A note on the centre middle (E seat) across all PE rows: it's the only middle in a 2-3-2 layout. Avoid it unless you're travelling as a three.
8. Economy (World Traveller)
The 787-9's Economy cabin is one of the more pleasant 3-3-3 layouts in the sky — Recaro seats, electronic dimming windows, Panasonic or Thales IFE at every seat. Two trade-offs to know about.
Row 30 (legacy) / Row 60 (Club Suite) is the exit row. Extra legroom (~38–40 inches) but with caveats: the door structure intrudes about 80–85% of the seat width on the A and K seats, the tray table lives in the armrest, and the centre block (D/E/F) has the lavatory directly ahead — which means most of the bulkhead "extra legroom" is offset by lavatory traffic, smell, and queuing.
✅ Best Seats
- Legacy: 31A, 31K, 34A, 34K, 37A, 37K, 40A, 40K — post-exit windows with strong window alignment. Quieter than the rear of the cabin, full recline, the best of standard Economy.
- Club Suite: 61A, 61K, 65A, 65K — equivalents on the new variant. Same logic: post-exit, good window alignment, mid-cabin position.
💡 Exit Row Trade-off
If you specifically want maximum legroom and accept the trade-offs, 30B/30J (legacy) or 60B/60J (Club Suite) are the picks — exit-row middles avoid the door intrusion of A/K and the lavatory-adjacent penalty of D/E/F. Counterintuitive, but in this cabin the centre seats of the exit row are arguably the best legroom-to-trade-off ratio on the aircraft.
🚫 Avoid
- Legacy: 41A, 41K, all of rows 42–44. 41A/K have no window (wall only). 42–44 are the lavatory cluster — adjacent rows, partial last rows with no A/K seats, worst position for service and deplaning.
- Club Suite: 71A, 71K, all of rows 72–75. Same pattern. 71A/K are the no-window seats, and row 73 onwards is the rear lavatory zone.

| Premium Economy | 16A, 16B, 16J, 16K | 45A, 45B, 45J, 45K |
| Economy (best window) | 31A/K, 34A/K, 37A/K, 40A/K | 61A/K, 65A/K |
| Economy (best legroom) | 30B, 30J | 60B, 60J |
10. Known Quirks
- Club Suite seat 7K does not exist. On the legacy aircraft, 7K is the single best Business seat. On the Club Suite refit, the equivalent position is 8K (rear bulkhead window of the forward cabin). Different aircraft, different numbering.
- The 787-9 is quieter than the 777. Composite fuselage, lower cabin altitude, more humid air. Long sectors feel materially less tiring on this aircraft.
- Electronic window dimming. No physical shades — the window tints electronically. Cabin crew can override window controls cabin-wide, so on overnight flights expect the windows to be dimmed regardless of your preference.
- Premium Economy bulkhead has no floor storage. Tray table and screen are in the armrest. Bags must go in the overhead bin for take-off and landing.
- Exit row recline. Row 30 (legacy) and row 60 (Club Suite) recline as standard — the bulkhead exit row on the 787-9 is not recline-restricted, which is a positive vs. many competitor exit rows.
11. FAQs
Does the BA 787-9 have Club Suite?
Some of them, yes. As of early 2026, 10 of BA's 28 787-9s have been refitted with Club Suite (1-2-1 with doors); the other 18 still operate legacy Club World (2-3-2 yin-yang). Roughly a one-in-three chance of the new product on any given booking.
How do I check which version I'm on?
Find your aircraft registration on your booking or ManageMyBooking, then check it against our flight-number lookup. Registrations G-ZBKA through G-ZBKR are the legacy frames; the Club Suite refits carry later registrations.
Is First Class worth it on the 787-9?
The First cabin is identical to other BA 787-9s — eight private suites in a 1-2-1 layout, intimate and quiet. Whether it's worth the cash or miles premium over Club Suite is a fare-by-fare question. On the legacy aircraft, the gap between First and Club World is enormous. On the Club Suite refit, the gap is much narrower.
Is the 787-9 quieter than the 777?
Yes, noticeably. Composite construction, lower cabin altitude (around 6,000 feet vs. 8,000 feet), and more humid air. Most passengers feel less fatigued on the 787 over a long sector.
Which BA 787-9 routes are most likely to be Club Suite?
BA does not publicly designate routes as Club Suite-only, and aircraft swap across routes daily. That said, longer ultra-long-haul routes have skewed slightly toward the newer aircraft in 2025–26 schedules. Your booking-day registration check is more reliable than route-based guessing.
What's the best Business Class seat on the 787-9?
On the legacy variant: 7K, for its rear-facing mini-cabin position with bulkhead exit access. On the Club Suite refit: 8A or 8K, the forward-cabin rear bulkhead suites with no foot traffic past you.
