First flights

Air New Zealand has long been the most innovative airline in Economy. The airline first introduced the Skycouch back in 2011 — three side-by-side seats with footrests that raise to form a flat surface, changing the game for couples and families on long-haul flights. Skynest is the next leap: the world's first lie-flat beds in Economy, and unlike Skycouch, these are proper sleep pods — not repurposed seat rows.

The airline plans to begin Skynest travel from November 2026, initially on the next newly delivered Boeing 787-9 operating the Auckland–New York route.

What is the Skynest?

The Skynest consists of six full-length lie-flat sleep pods arranged in a "V" shape — essentially three-level bunk beds. Each bed is 80 inches long and 23 inches wide, and comes with bedding (pillow, sheets, blanket) plus a "Nestcessities" amenity kit containing an eye mask, socks, earplugs, a dental kit, and skincare products from Aotea. Each pod also has a USB outlet, reading light, ventilation nozzle, and privacy curtain.

How Much Does Skynest Cost?

Price context

Skynest sessions start at $495 (~$125/hour). For comparison, upgrading to Premium Economy on AKL–JFK typically costs $800–1,200 above Economy — and includes upgraded meals, more space for the entire flight, and a dedicated cabin.

Air New Zealand's own Chief Transformation Officer has acknowledged the product may only break even financially — which suggests the airline isn't banking on this becoming a major revenue driver. It's as much a brand statement as a product.

How Do You Book It?

You can't book a Skynest pod directly — you first need to book a regular Economy or Premium Economy seat, then add Skynest as a paid extra. Pods cannot be occupied during takeoff and landing, so on a 17-hour AKL–JFK flight, Air New Zealand calculates each pod could potentially be sold up to three times, though initially they'll offer two sessions per flight.

Each passenger is limited to one session. Families travelling on the same ticket can book one session per passenger, subject to availability.

Is It Worth It?

Worth it if…

  • You're on the 17hr AKL–JFK route
  • You can't afford/find Business Premier
  • Sleep quality is your top priority
  • You want the novelty factor

Skip it if…

  • Premium Economy is available for similar money
  • You have points to upgrade to Business
  • Your flight is under 12 hours
  • You're claustrophobic (bunk-style pods)

Skynest will initially only be on two aircraft — it's a deliberate test before any wider rollout, and there are no plans to fit it to the 777 fleet or existing 787-9s. So this won't be something you can reliably book on every Air New Zealand long-haul flight anytime soon.

If you're considering the upgrade purely for sleep quality, you'll get better value booking Premium Economy — or, on available routes, using points to upgrade to Business Premier. But if you're an Economy traveller on AKL–JFK and you want some guaranteed lie-flat time without paying for a full Business ticket, the Skynest is a genuinely novel option.
